Playtime is about more than fun. It keeps your dog physically active, mentally engaged, and gives you both a chance to strengthen your bond. The right toy can also support good habits from an early age — which makes the choice worth thinking about.

Why toys matter

Dogs are naturally curious, and without their own things to play with, household objects quickly become fair game. Giving your dog suitable toys from the start helps redirect that curiosity in a positive direction. One thing worth bearing in mind: avoid giving your dog old personal belongings to play with. Dogs cannot distinguish between a worn-out shoe and a new one, and allowing it can make the habit difficult to change later.

Size and weight

A good toy should feel comfortable for your dog to carry, chew, and play with. Too small, and it can become a choking risk. Too large, and it may cause discomfort — particularly for smaller breeds whose jaws are not built for heavier, harder objects. For smaller dogs especially, weight matters just as much as size.

Age and life stage

A young, energetic puppy needs something durable enough to withstand enthusiastic play. Toys that tear apart quickly can become a safety concern, so sturdiness is worth prioritising early on. For older dogs, softer materials are often a better fit — gentler on sensitive gums and easier to manage. Soft rubber balls tend to work well for senior dogs, regardless of breed size.

What your dog actually enjoys

Every dog has their own preferences, and it can take a little time to work out what suits yours best. Some dogs are drawn to interactive toys that reward them with movement or problem-solving. Others are happiest with a ball, a rope, or something to chew. If you are not sure where to start, trying a small variety is a practical way to find out what your dog gravitates towards most.
